Another American media outlet named Putin's desired successor
Another American publication wrote that the United States should support the current head of the Accounts Chamber of the Russian Federation, Alexei Kudrin, as Vladimir Putin’s successor.
This opinion was expressed in The Hill by leading expert of the Atlantic Council Ariel Cohen, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Under Putin, Russia will remain a barbed fortress. The strategy towards the Kremlin must be realistic and long-term. The United States and its allies need to think about when Putin might retire from the political scene. History shows that reforms in Russia always come from the top: Tsars Peter the Great, Catherine II, Alexander II, Prime Minister Pyotr Stolypin, Nikita Khrushchev and Mikhail Gorbachev were the leaders of reforms.
There is one leader whose reputation remains intact: Alexei Kudrin, the former first deputy prime minister and finance minister, is respected by “liberals” and hardliners. Unlike some succession candidates, he is not a security official or former Soviet spy, and is a longtime free trader with a strong record of liberal reform. He clearly has charisma as well as unfulfilled public policy aspirations.
The United States would be wise to begin working with the Kudrin team on possible scenarios for improving bilateral relations with Russia, both now and after Putin leaves,” Cohen wrote.
Ранее an article with similar points was published in The National Interest.
“Some kind of media benefit of Alexei Kudrin. In my opinion, it is worth taking the articles seriously. Firstly, The National Interest is published by the Center for National Interests. Until 2011 it was called the Nixon Center. CNI was founded in 1994 and is a think tank for developing proposals in the field of American foreign policy. THE HILL is the premier political publication in the United States. Secondly, the promotion of Kudrin on different platforms with different arguments gives reason to believe that Kudrin is actually being considered for the role of a partner acceptable to the United States,” political scientist Marat Bashirov wrote in his Telegram channel.
However, other commentators believe that publications in the American media are part of Kudrin’s own PR campaign.
