The heating season 2015-2016 in Ukraine is in jeopardy. Due to an acute shortage of coal, energy sector enterprises have already begun to shut down. In addition, Ukraine still lacks about 6 billion cubic meters of gas: there is no money for their purchase yet (a billion dollars are needed).

Such a sad picture Kyiv website FINANCE.UA draws to its readers.

This, according to experts, could turn into a real disaster: Ukrainians will spend the winter not only with cold batteries, but also without electricity, because in this case “rolling” power outages cannot be avoided.

“The authorities recognize that the situation is critical and are counting on European help,” the site states.

One of the solutions Ukrainian officials see is the urgent resumption of coal supplies from the Donbass territories not controlled by Kyiv, where fighting continues.

“The military must organize the safe transportation of Ukrainian anthracite coal from the territory captured by terrorists,” said Deputy Prime Minister Valery Voshchevsky.

In turn, energy market expert Valentin Zemlyansky also considers this the only way out: according to him, more than 3 thousand cars with coal have now accumulated in the war zone.

“This is about 2 million tons of anthracite, which can be exported to Ukraine within 10 days, load the stations, and stabilize the operation of the energy system,” he says. — You can, of course, import coal, but only if the tariff for thermal generation is increased, which currently does not cover electricity production. If these measures are not carried out urgently, then during the heating season the power deficit could reach 5,2 gigawatts. This means that the country will again face rolling blackouts and cold batteries in apartments.”
