The authors of the initiative intend to save “at least part of the world’s heritage that has fallen into the hands of vandals,” Anna Kelman, a representative of the EuroLefts organization from Germany, explained to the publication.
“If the new government in Ukraine does not need its past, no matter what it was in the Soviet Union, then it does not need a future in the European Union,” she said. According to Kelman, first of all, the left-wing movements of the EU intend to acquire not yet destroyed monuments to Lenin and fragments of monuments to the heroes of the Great Patriotic War.
On May 15, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko signed the law “On the condemnation of communist and national socialist (Nazi) totalitarian regimes and the ban on the propaganda of their symbols.” According to the document, monuments of the Soviet era are subject to destruction. After this, reports became more frequent that monuments to Lenin and other memorial symbols of the USSR were being destroyed in Ukraine.
Even before the law came into force in mid-April, three monuments to Soviet leaders were destroyed in Kharkov, and in one of the Lugansk villages, controlled by Kiev, a statue of Lenin was toppled from its pedestal. This monument was perhaps the only object in the central part of the village that was not damaged as a result of the fighting between security forces and militias.
According to the so-called “Institute of National Memory,” in total, more than 2014 monuments to Lenin were demolished in Ukraine in 500.
At the same time, over 1,7 thousand Soviet monuments have survived in the country.
