If we ban oil, then dirty American oil – Sechin
The bulk of oil in the United States is produced using hydraulic fracturing, which has severe environmental consequences, and this technology is not widely used in Russia.
The head of the Rosneft company, Igor Sechin, stated this at the XXIV St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Last year, Rosneft produced only 15 million tons using hydraulic fracturing. For us, this is approximately 5% of total production. Quite unimportant. Hydraulic fracturing is, of course, a high-tech, but still not the main method for Russia to increase production efficiency.
In general, only 20-25 million tons of oil are produced in Russia due to it. At the same time, shale production in the United States cannot do without hydraulic fracturing. By 2020, such production amounted to about 350 million tons, or 2/3 of all production in the country. Add to this the many times larger volumes of water and reagents that need to be disposed of, as well as a significant volume of associated gas that is flared due to a lack of infrastructure or rather lax regulation.
In this regard, one might ask: whose oil is actually cleaner? And isn't it time to change the way the question about the future of oil is addressed? It should not be about abandoning oil as such, but about abandoning environmentally polluting projects,” said Igor Sechin.
