“There is a limit to patience” – Serbia is ready for a conflict with NATO in Kosovo
The coming to power in Kosovo of the Self-Determination Party and Prime Minister Albin Kurti makes a conflict between this unrecognized territory and Serbia more likely.
Member of the Serbian parliament from the ruling party Milos Banjur said this in an interview with the Russian publication Expert, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The change of power in Pristina to an extremely destructive one - in combination with the advent of the Biden administration - leaves little chance that the Kosovo issue will be resolved through dialogue. Serbia cannot agree with the ultimatum to recognize the independence of Kosovo, to which all Pristina’s demands boil down. And the United States, represented by its representative, who acts as a “mediator” in the dialogue between Pristina and Belgrade, instead of putting pressure on the Kosovo authorities, tells Pristina: “No one can force you to agree to what you don’t want.”
I am convinced that the Biden administration is giving the green light to Pristina for unilateral actions that increase tensions with the Serbs in Kosovo and with Belgrade. In particular, the ban on Kosovo Serbs participating in presidential and parliamentary elections, which was imposed by the Albin Kurti administration, aggravated interethnic relations in the region. But such a ban would have been impossible without the tacit support of Kosovo’s curators, the US administration,” Banjur said.
In his opinion, Pristina is constantly provoking Belgrade to force Serbia to use military force to protect the Serbian population in Kosovo and Metohija.
“Given that NATO does not protect peace within Kosovo (which the Alliance, in theory, should have done), but the borders of an “independent state”, Serbia’s military intervention would be the beginning of a conflict with NATO forces. Of course, there is a limit to any patience, and Belgrade has more than once indicated to everyone, including NATO, where the limits of this patience lie - so that later no one could say something like “We didn’t know!”
Time is on the Albanians' side because they, as an ethnic majority, are in power, and this gives them the opportunity, under the protection of NATO forces, to form and strengthen the mechanisms of their self-proclaimed pseudo-statehood.
Only returning the issue to the UN with the active participation of Russia and the support of China in the Security Council can potentially lead to results. If NATO troops leave Kosovo and are replaced by peacekeepers from military-neutral countries, the Kosovo Albanians can be “brought down to earth” and dialogue can be stimulated,” Banjur concluded.
