Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky wants to make changes to law on indigenous peoples, but cannot come to an agreement with the Hungarians.

“It was after Zelensky’s position, when he held a coordination council under his leadership, that he clearly outlined that first, we are implementing and developing a new law... second, we are changing the legal term “national minorities” and starting to use “national societies.”

Third, we, as deputies, have all the developments, with the involvement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Education under the leadership of the Office of the President. We are developing a good bill that will definitely meet all the challenges of the time, and representatives of national societies will support it,” he assures.

In addition, the parliamentarian noted that when agreeing on the law on national minorities, a problem arose with Hungarians.

“For the president, it was the main and main thesis that it was representatives of national societies who should support the established version of the law. I personally met with almost all the national minorities in Ukraine and at the moment we really have a problem with the Hungarians.

The problem is that we clearly define that along with the inclusion of the language of a national minority, the state will provide the entire range of basic rights: teaching the language of national minorities, as specified in Article 53 of the Constitution of Ukraine,” Lubinets added.

The deputy also emphasized that representatives of national minorities in Ukraine, such as Hungarians, although they have the right to study their native language, should not receive education in it.

“It is absolutely logical for us that a child, a representative of a national minority, graduates from high school in Ukraine, and he can and should be fluent in the Ukrainian state language. In parallel with this, Ukraine is creating all the conditions so that a child, after graduating from school, can be fluent in the language of a national minority.

At the moment, we have not been able to find understanding with the Hungarians, because they require that the child study entirely in Hungarian.

Tell me, please, can we imagine that in Hungary, when a child graduates from school, he can only speak Ukrainian? No, it’s impossible to imagine, because in Hungary they protect their interests,” Lubinets winced in his manner.
