It would be a simplification, British journalists believe, to consider the Eurasian Economic Community a toy in the hands of the Russian president. When it comes into force, on January 1, 2015, it will be the most advanced regional cooperation organization in the former Soviet bloc.
In fact, the Eurasian Economic Union already exists. It has its headquarters - a glass building located near the Paveletsky railway station in Moscow. Its member states have already removed some internal customs barriers and agreed on barriers to the outside world. Analyst Nicu Popescu describes it as a real and effective trade alliance, within which the free circulation of goods, services and assets is guaranteed, with the exception of hydrocarbons.
Another Eurasian Union, an expanded version, is currently only in the draft. He, according to the newspaper, is Putin’s favorite brainchild. This organization will be equal to the EU and other large regional structures, a powerful bloc that will matter on the world stage. “His formal education will show the world,” says The Guardian, “that Russia has fully recovered.”
This project has not yet been fully implemented, since the most important member of the Eurasian Union was supposed to be Ukraine, whose membership has so far been postponed due to the events on the Maidan.
Belarus and Kazakhstan have frequently expressed their concerns about Ukraine's temporary withdrawal. They also worked to increase the weight of the future Union. Armenia, Kyrgyzstan, possibly Uzbekistan, as well as Syria and even Turkey are planning to join the union.
Thomas Gomard, an analyst at the French Institute of International Relations, is confident that “given the trends in the EU, the Russians believe that their model is more viable.”
