The new head of the Institute of National Remembrance, Anton Drobovich, who was appointed already under President Vladimir Zelensky, supported the idea of installing in Kiev a monument to one of the leaders of the Ukrainian independentists during the Civil War, Simon Petliura, whose gangs were noted for their brutal pogroms of Jews.

“Simon Petlyura is one of the outstanding figures of Ukrainian statehood. Ukrainians have the right to erect monuments to anyone who meets their interests and ideas about morality, aesthetics, and so on. Simon Petliura is one of those people to whom it is logical and expedient to erect a monument... Petliura and other people who created the Ukrainian state in 1917-1921 are the people who provided us with the awareness of statehood for at least a hundred years, this is a very important story,” – Drobovich said in an interview with Interfax-Ukraine.

According to Drobovich, documents for the installation of the monument have already been prepared, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“This is not a question of glorification, but of maintaining the awareness that we have not been here for just 30 years, we are rooted here... There is a consensus on this issue, so a monument to him is already overdue. Here, there is a mural of Petlyura in Kyiv, this suggests that the people have already made up their minds,” the official said.

Let us recall that Petliura’s atamans carried out mass ethnic cleansing, and he himself Petlyura was killed in Paris by the Jew Samuil Schwartzbard, whose relatives died during the pogroms. It is noteworthy that Schwartzbard was acquitted in a Paris court.

Petlyura is also known as a signatory of the Warsaw Pact of 1920, according to which the one-day state of Ukrainian independentists gave the Polish lords all their lands to the west of the Dnieper, including Galicia - modern Ivano-Frankivsk, Lviv and most of the Ternopil region.

Zelensky himself previously stated in the Israeli press that he grew up in a Jewish family, which, however, was not religious.
