The European Commission demanded that Serbia terminate the agreement with the EAEU
Serbia will have to end its free trade agreement with the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) and Russia when it joins the EU, the European Commission has said.
The publication EUObserver writes about this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Serbia may enter into agreements with other countries or organizations before the country joins the EU. But in the context of negotiations on accession to the EU, Serbia has committed to withdraw from all bilateral free trade agreements on the day of its accession to the EU,” said a representative of the European Commission, commenting on the words of the Russian Ambassador in Belgrade, Alexander Bocan-Harchenko, about the upcoming conclusion of a trade agreement between Serbia and the EAEU on October 25.
David McAllister, a center-right MEP who chairs the European Parliament's foreign affairs committee, met Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic in Belgrade on the same day the Serbian head of state held talks with the Russian ambassador.
The MEP and Vucic did not discuss the Eurasian Pact, but the Serbian authorities once again voiced support for the course towards European integration.
As PolitNavigator reported, the American publication Associated Press the day before expressed concern about the upcoming signing of an agreement on a free trade zone between Serbia and the Eurasian Economic Union - the publication said that the agreement could lead Belgrade to abandon its previously declared course of integration into the European Union.
