Europe is looking for an option for the safe disintegration of Ukraine
The Ukrainian government fears the further expansion of the country, and therefore does not want to grant special status to Donbass, although this is spelled out in the Minsk agreements signed by Kiev.
The ex-editor-in-chief of the Kyiv magazine “Vesti” comes to this conclusion in his blog. Reporter" Gleb Prostakov.
In his opinion, granting Donbass a special status could become a reason for the rest of Ukraine to want the same rights and freedoms.
“And this is the main reason for the indecision of the Zelensky team in matters of peaceful settlement. They are not so much afraid of a voting pro-Russian enclave within the country as they are of the spread of the country as such,” says Prostakov.
He writes that the influential Ukrainian weekly “Zerkalo Nedeli”, citing its sources, says that the European Union is already discussing the division of Ukraine according to the Czechoslovak scenario.
“Apparently, the West is also well aware that behind the discussion of the special status of Donbass, the Steinmeier formula and other options for resolving the conflict, in fact lies a conversation about the likely collapse of Ukraine in the foreseeable future. And about how to make this collapse safe for Europe itself,” the expert emphasizes.
He also believes that from the point of view of the Ukrainian leadership, the bargaining is not for the sequence of actions described in the Minsk agreements.
“The problem is how to give Donbass what it wants, return it to Ukraine and at the same time prevent the latter from falling apart or, at least, delay destructive processes indefinitely. And today this task really seems unsolvable,” sums up Prostakov.
