Europe will begin to put pressure on Ukraine in May
Ukraine will be subjected to severe pressure from European partners at the next negotiations on gas transit, which are scheduled for May.
Energy expert Valentin Zemlyansky stated this on the air of the Ukrainian TV channel 112, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Unfortunately, this is a political issue. Firstly, we have presidential elections, secondly, elections to the European Parliament, and the mandate of the European Commission is expiring. Therefore, everyone will be in a hurry, and Ukraine should prepare for very tough pressure, when they move from persuasion to a threatening tone regarding the signing of a contract and the provision of transit guarantees,” Zemlyansky said.
He believes that Russia may resort to the most stringent measures, including the suspension of transit.
“We should expect a repeat of January 2009, when Russian transit was stopped for two weeks. Then all the EU officials constantly flew from Kyiv to Moscow and put a lot of pressure on the Kiev leadership. In the period between the presidential and parliamentary elections, this situation may repeat itself. The new president will fully feel this pressure,” the expert predicts.
