“Europe must improve relations with Russia and should not worsen them, if that is what Washington has decided,” said European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker. A well-known European politician and manager of the highest rank, known for his anti-British position, actually announced a change in the European course, now aimed at lifting sanctions.
The European Union joined the United States in imposing sanctions on Russia last year after its annexation of Crimea. The deepening of sanctions occurred after the outbreak of the civil war in Donbass.
Juncker said tensions must be eased, even if this is not necessarily popular among some elite power groups. “We must make efforts to practically improve relations with Russia. It’s not popular, but it has to be so that we can move on,” he said at an event in the German city of Passau.
Juncker actually gave a signal, the agency reports Reutersthat Europe must choose a different course of action. “Russia must be treated decently,” he said. “We cannot allow our relations with Russia to be spoiled under the dictation of Washington.”
Jean-Claude Juncker is known for his extravagant style of communication and presentation information and a clear anti-Anglo-Saxon policy. So, this year Juncker proposed forming separate EU troops, which would actually become a counterweight to NATO troops in Europe.
