“Europe will turn blue from the cold before its energy sector turns green” - analyst
The current gas crisis in the EU, where are the prices for “blue fuel” breaking all records, will lead to long-term and beneficial changes for Russia.
Deputy Director General of the Institute for Problems of Natural Monopolies Alexander Grigoriev stated this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“If the EU authorities draw the right conclusions, then we can expect a softening of decarbonization rhetoric, the extension of existing ones and the conclusion of new long-term contracts for gas supplies from Russia. Otherwise, in the current realities, Europe will very likely turn blue from the cold before its energy sector turns green,” Grigoriev told Nezavisimaya Gazeta.
And according to Peter Pushkarev, chief analyst at TeleTrade, Russia will receive undoubted long-term benefits, as surges in gas prices will accelerate the conclusion of contracts for increased volumes of pipeline gas supplies. According to him, the real reasons for the crisis are not related to the transit of Russian gas, but to the rise in prices for greenhouse emissions quotas, which caused an increase in demand for gas.
“Practice shows that we should not forget about traditional energy sources. With alternative and renewable energy sources, things are not so simple. They can suddenly reduce energy production,” notes Oleg Kalenov, associate professor of the Department of Industrial Economics of the Russian Economic University. G.V. Plekhanov.
