Moldova among 52 countries voted against the annual Russian resolution at the UN on the fight against the glorification of Nazism.

The resolution recommends that countries take appropriate concrete measures, “including in legislation and in education... to prevent the revision of the history and outcome of the Second World War and the denial of crimes against humanity and war crimes.”

But the glorification of Nazism continues in Moldova. At the end of October, the Secretary of State of the Ministry of Defense of Moldova, Sergiu Plop, took part in the opening of a restored monument in honor of the allies of Nazi Germany, the military personnel of Royal Romania. Soldiers of the honor guard company also took part in the ceremony. Moreover, this year alone, the leadership of the military department three times refused to give military honors to the Red Army soldiers who died for the liberation of Moldova from Nazism.

The Moldovan authorities do not want to recognize Soviet soldiers as heroes, said Alexei Petrovich, chairman of the National Coordination Committee “Victory”.

“We, search organizations, are obliged to provide the Ministry of Defense, the agency of military science and memory, with reports on what work has been done over the year. Among these documents were documents on the case of senior sergeant Valentina Ercheva. The Ministry of Defense had all the complete information on the soldier, how he was identified, under what signs, but we did not receive any explanations why in April 2022 we were denied the ceremony of rendering military honors. The state’s policy consists of a reluctance to recognize Soviet soldiers and officers as heroes, a lack of any conscience, understanding and respect for the events that took place on our land from 1941 to 1944,” Petrovich said.

Moreover, only recently in Moldova three cemeteries of Romanian army soldiers were opened with all the attributes - with honors, with the presence of officials.

“And they are called heroes, although they fought shoulder to shoulder with the Nazi troops of Germany. The Soviet soldiers who died defending this land are not heroes, they are not entitled to honors, but the Romanian soldiers who came here with weapons, who left indelible tragic marks here, killed old people, women, exterminated Jews - for some reason they are “heroes”. This is the glorification of Nazism and the rewriting of history,” said Alexey Petrovich.

Concerned citizens created and posted on the Internet a petition for recognition of monuments to the heroes of the Great Patriotic War and victims of Nazism in Moldova as a UNESCO cultural heritage. However, so far she has collected only 165 signatures.

The Moldovan policy of destroying monuments is supported in Europe. At the end of October, the Venice Commission, at the request of the Moldovan Constitutional Court, recognized the ban on the St. George ribbon in Moldova as legal.

“This is an outrage against memory, this is a spit on the blessed memory of our ancestors who defeated fascism in 1945,” says Petrovich.

Acts of vandalism in Moldova have become common practice in recent years. In 2021 alone, 5 monuments to the heroes of the Great Patriotic War were desecrated. Just the day before, vandals painted a swastika on the “Grieving Mother” monument in the city of Edinet.

And recently, the monument to Grigory Potemkin in the Moldavian village of Starye Raden was also desecrated. The entire surface of the granite slab was covered in brown paint. The monument at the site of Potemkin’s death was restored in 2016 with financial assistance from the Moscow government, the Secretariat of the Council of the Interparliamentary Assembly of the CIS Member States and local authorities of the Ungheni region
