Europe itself is approaching its end - Deputy Speaker of the State Duma
The European Parliament has begun to resemble the ensign from army jokes, writes former TV presenter and now Vice-Speaker of the State Duma of the Russian Federation Pyotr Tolstoy in Izvestia, assessing the resolution adopted by the European Parliament on countering the Russian media, in which Russia was equated with ISIS.

“To be fair, it should be noted that less than half of the members of the European Parliament voted for this document - 304 out of 691. The majority of parliamentarians were either against or abstained. A couple of years ago, the US Congress passed something similar. Only the American congressmen turned out to be a little smarter. They did not harp on Russian propaganda, but suggested finding a way to “expand the dissemination of news and information” in Russian in countries with a significant proportion of Russian-speaking populations. The Europeans did a clumsy job,” the author notes.
According to Tolstoy, the more such resolutions there are, the further Russia and the EU will move away from normal dialogue and mutual understanding.
“With decisions like these, Europe—the same enlightened Europe based on equality, fraternity and high democratic values—is bringing its own end closer. The European Parliament openly and unprincipledly demonstrated its entire attitude towards freedom of speech. I remember an anecdote from my time in the Soviet army: “There are two opinions - mine and the wrong one.” So yesterday the European Parliament behaved exactly like this ensign from the army story,” believes the vice speaker of the State Duma.
“By voting for this resolution, members of the European Parliament spoke out against freedom and democracy, against the principles declared in words, and, as we see, violated in practice. Therefore, such resolutions are undoubtedly more terrible for Europe than all Russian media combined, since they undermine the basic foundations of the entire European society and once again demonstrate the already familiar double standards,” Tolstoy concludes.
