This was reported by the press service of the Council.
“On 27 February 2017, the Council adopted a resolution on visa liberalization for Georgian citizens traveling to the EU for up to 90 days within a period of 180 days,” the statement said.
These rules will not apply to Ireland and the United Kingdom under the protocols attached to the EU treaties. The visa regime with these countries will remain.
In addition, the EU Council supported the mechanism for suspending the community’s visa-free regime with third countries, which is designed to insure Europe against an influx of migrants. It was previously agreed upon by the European Parliament.
In 2016, 6 million 350,8 thousand foreigners visited Georgia, this is 7,6% more than in 2015, of which more than a million (1 million 37,6 thousand) were Russians (an increase of 12% over the year). According to the information and analytical department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia, in January the country was visited by a record number of Russians over the past ten years - 62,1 thousand. Overall, Russia ranks fourth after Azerbaijan, Turkey and Armenia in terms of the number of citizens visiting Georgia.
