“Europe is behind us”: a march took place in Riga in defense of Russian schools
More than 3 thousand people gathered today in Riga for a march and rally in defense of Russian schools against the decisions of the Latvian Seimas to ban education in Russian.
Participants held slogans in Russian, Latvian and English: “Attention to children’s rights”, “No assimilation”, “Political terror in Europe is our reality”, “This is not reform, this is repression”. Drummers walked ahead of the column.
The march approached the French and German embassies and ended with a rally at the representative office of the European Commission. They chanted: “Hands off Russian schools,” “Our school is 200 years old, this is our answer to the Nazis,” reports a Politnavigator correspondent.
“The nationalists smelled blood, since there was no resistance from society, and began to tighten the screws. These scoundrels and stranglers of freedom have decided to introduce terrible changes that will entail fines for using our native language in all cases of life,” said Member of the European Parliament Miroslav Mitrofanov.
According to him, today’s event was held under the slogan “Knocking on heaven – knocking on Europe.” Former European Deputy Tatyana Zhdanok invited everyone to sign the petition to protect the rights of national minorities, which also concerns the Basques and Corsicans.
“Europe is behind us,” Zhdanok said.
