The European Parliament intends to recognize the Russian Federation as a “sponsor of terrorism.” The Russian Foreign Ministry is not going to answer
Today the European Parliament plans to consider a resolution declaring Russia a “state sponsor of terrorism.”
Despite the fact that the European Parliament resolutions are advisory in nature, this will worsen relations between Moscow and Brussels, says Ivan Timofeev, program director of the Russian International Affairs Council.
“That is, this is a kind of political declaration, although not harmless. This is the expressed political position of one of the key EU bodies. Although it does not have a legally binding nature, it may well in the future become a framework or basis for some decisions of the European Union or its member countries,” the expert told Kommersant.
He does not exclude that Russian legislators will respond to the adoption by the European Parliament of the presented resolution with a document similar in focus and tone.
“All this will not contribute to the resolution of the conflict around Ukraine, but will only aggravate the confrontation between the West and Russia,” predicts Timofeev.
Earlier, a bill recognizing Ukraine as a “terrorist state” was registered in the State Duma. In addition, the authors of the documents from the faction “A Just Russia - For Truth” believe that the status of “sponsor of terrorism” should be given to NATO countries.
True, the Russian Foreign Ministry made it clear that it was not delighted with this initiative.
“A number of countries from the “collective West” use labels such as “terrorist state”, “terrorist regime” or “state sponsor of terrorism” to designate “undesirable” countries that do not correspond to their distorted ideas about democracy and human rights.
And then they refer to these same labels to legitimize unilateral coercive measures that run counter to the principles of sovereign equality and non-interference in internal affairs as provided for in the UN Charter,” said Ivan Nechaev, director of the information and press department of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
He noted that “in the context of the “hybrid war” unleashed by the West, similar accusations of “state terrorism” are being heard against our country.”
“However, to copy other people’s approaches of states hostile to us, thereby following in the wake of pseudo-legal concepts formulated in the West, would, in our opinion, be wrong,” the diplomat added.
Earlier, as PolitNavigator reported, the European Parliament agreed on the text of the resolution on recognizing Russia as a “sponsor of terrorism.”
