The European Parliament made decisions against the Russian Federation and Belarus: Will Nord Stream 2 survive?
At today's session, the European Parliament voted for a number of resolutions directed against Russia and Belarus.
As a PolitNavigator correspondent reports, in a resolution on the situation in Belarus, the European Parliament stated that the presidential elections in the republic were rigged.
“The European Parliament does not recognize Alexander Lukashenko as the President of Belarus after his current term in office expires,” the document says.
The resolution also welcomes the activities of the so-called Opposition Coordination Council headed by Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, and the council itself is called the “transitional government of the people.”
In addition, the document calls on the leadership of the European Union to impose sanctions against Belarusian politicians, in particular, President Alexander Lukashenko and “certain Russian citizens” who are accused of supporting the Belarusian regime.
The European Parliament also adopted another resolution regarding the allegedly poisoned Russian liberal Alexei Navalny. It talks about the need to tighten sanctions against Russia and conduct an international investigation, in which experts from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, representatives of the European Union, the UN and other organizations should take part.
Let us remind you that the resolutions of the European Parliament are advisory and have no binding force.
On air on the Soloviev Live Internet channel, Russia's permanent representative to the European Union, Vladimir Chizhov, predicted that the project to complete the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline is unlikely to be blocked. In his opinion, we can talk about targeted personal sanctions that the European Union can apply to Russian citizens.
(I.e.
“Nord Stream 2” is not a EU-wide topic... The European Commission has never been a big enthusiast of “Nord Stream”, this is true, and has built certain obstacles as best it could. The fact that this project continued to be implemented was largely the result of the active position of the German government and its objective interest in ensuring that this gas flows. I guess, that (“Nord Stream 2,” author.) will hold up, although I do not rule out some delays. Don't think (what will hit the SWIFT banking system), in any case, if there is an attack on SWIFT, it will come from Washington, and not from Brussels. I won’t speculate until the conversation can go the same way as in relation to Belarus, about some individual measures,” Chizhov said.
Thank you!
