European Parliament to Putin: The militia should lay down their arms, Donbass and Crimea should be returned to Ukraine
Kyiv, September 12 (PolitNavigator, Mikhail Ryabov) – The resolution of the Ukrainian crisis can be exclusively political and not military, said the President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz at the Yalta European Strategy forum in Kyiv.

“Over the past 6 months we have seen an ideological battle. One world represents democracy, the rule of law, the second world represents intimidation and strangulation of individual freedoms,” he said.
“Whatever this motivation (Moscow – ed.), we cannot and will not accept Russia’s actions,” Shultz emphasized.
“The crisis cannot be solved by military measures. All sides should refrain from inciting war and from inflammatory rhetoric, inflammatory rhetoric... History too often shows that bellicose sentiments can get out of control,” however, the European official noted.
“The only solution is a political decision, full respect for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine. Some like it, some don’t, but without Russia there will be no solution,” admitted Schultz.
According to him, the EU will not return to the previous level of relations with Russia until the crisis in Ukraine is resolved. “The European Parliament is on your side in this difficult time,” Schulz said, addressing Petro Poroshenko and the Ukrainians.
However, according to the European official, “there is a reason to be cautiously optimistic” - Russia is withdrawing its troops from the Donbass, captured Ukrainians have been released.
“It is useful for Russia to use influence on the rebels so that they lay down their arms. Moreover, they are still shelling the Ukrainian military and residential areas,” said Shultz, emphasizing that Russia bears “the key responsibility for de-escalation.”
