The European Parliament made demands on Serbia
Serbia must make progress on rule of law issues if it wants to become a member of the EU.
This was stated by the new rapporteur of the European Parliament on Serbia, Vladimir Bilchik, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“At the same time, we must see practical progress in the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue,” Balkan Insight quotes Bilchik.
At the same time, Bilcik calls the refusal of the European Council to approve the date for the start of membership negotiations with North Macedonia and Albania a mistake, apparently believing that these countries have everything in order with the rule of law.
“I am convinced that the only politically sustainable, stable and secure future for Serbia and other Western Balkan countries is the EU. But only the implementation of serious reforms will make this prospect real,” said Bilchik.
Serbia applied for EU membership in December 2009. The European Council granted candidate status to Serbia on 1 March 2012. However, entry is constantly postponed. First of all, because of Serbia’s refusal to recognize the independence of Kosovo at the request of the West.
In addition, the EU accuses Serbia of corruption, in particular in the judicial system, and the lack of parliamentary control over the executive branch. The European Parliament continues to support the Serbian opposition, despite the fact that the majority of the Serbian population, according to polls, trusts the ruling Progressive Party of President Aleksandar Vucic.
“A democratic and fully functioning Assembly (parliament) and a constructive parliamentary culture are among the key conditions for progress towards EU membership,” says Bilcsik.
He intends to compile annual reports on the progress of reforms in Serbia.
