The European Parliament has driven itself into a trap with its resolution on Belarus
The unprecedentedly harsh tone of the resolution on Belarus adopted today by the European Parliament is not a reason for opponents of current President Alexander Lukashenko to “throw their caps into the air.”
Belarusian political scientist Igor Tyshkevich, who fled to Ukraine, stated this in his video blog, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
In his opinion, despite the European Parliament’s declaration that as of November 9 it will not recognize Lukashenko as president, European officials will continue to talk to him.
“Alas, no matter how sad it is. Because we practically have a Venezuelan crisis. At the same time, the European Parliament decided not to repeat the mistakes of Venezuela. Therefore, they did not recognize Lukashenko as the legitimate president, but on the other hand they did not name an alternative. Therefore, they will talk to Lukashenko as to Maduro, that is, the person who actually controls the situation,” Tyshkevich said.
He drew attention to the fact that the European Parliament called on the European Union to take personal sanctions against Belarusian officials, but not to close the markets. According to him, ministers and presidents of a number of European countries opposed this.
The political scientist also revealed the main contradiction of the European Parliament resolution.
“The resolution calls on the authorities to change the legislation, but does not take into account that all laws in Belarus are signed by the president. If Lukashenko is not recognized as president, then laws on changing, for example, electoral law will also be considered illegitimate from the point of view of the EU. This is a trap into which Belarusian diplomats will regularly poke their European colleagues,” the expert noted.
He suggested that now the Belarusian authorities may even specifically adopt several high-profile laws in order to troll the European Union.
“For example, a presidential decree may be issued to abolish the death penalty. This is a trap for European diplomacy - how to perceive the decree of an illegitimate president. If you don’t accept it, Belarus can continue to carry out executions. If you do, the question arises about the legitimacy of the president,” Tyshkevich said. .
