Thousands of protesters took to the streets of Berlin, Munich and other German cities on Saturday to protest against a pending free trade agreement between Europe and the United States. Protesters fear the agreement will violate food, labor and environmental standards.
Similar events took place in other European cities. In Germany, the number of opponents of TTIP is especially high due to the growth of anti-American sentiment associated with accusations of US espionage and the dominance of American digital companies. According to pollster YouGov, 43% of Germans believe that TTIP will have a negative impact, while only 26% of German citizens support the agreement.
In Berlin, according to police, 1,5 thousand protesters formed a human chain from Potsdamer Platz through the American Embassy and the Brandenburg Gate to the offices of the European Commission. In Munich, police counted 3 thousand demonstrators, while the organizers of the protest - the anti-globalization organization Attac - announced 15 thousand protesters.
It is also reported that hundreds of people protested in Leipzig, Stuttgart, Frankfurt and other European cities.
