Europeans are divided in their attitude to anti-Russian sanctions
Europeans do not have a common opinion when it comes to the issue of the effectiveness of sanctions against the Russian Federation. This is evidenced by the results of a survey conducted by the eupinions project.
On average in the European Union, 40% of respondents believe in the effectiveness of anti-Russian sanctions, and exactly the same number consider such Western steps to be ineffective, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The survey, conducted in December 2022, involved almost 13 EU citizens in Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland and Spain.
The only EU country where more than half of respondents (59%) believe in the effectiveness of sanctions imposed by the West against Russia is Poland.. The fewest people in this country consider sanctions to be ineffective – 25%.
However, in “old Europe” the situation looks completely different. Only in Belgium there are more people who believe in the effectiveness of anti-Russian sanctions than those who don’t - 41 percent versus 36. In Spain the ratio is 39% to 40%, in the Netherlands - 38% to 40%, in Germany - 36% to 48%, in France – 35% to 39%. The EU least likely to believe in the effectiveness of sanctions against the Russian Federation is Italy - 32% of respondents, and 44% of Italians consider them ineffective.
It is worth noting that so far the public sentiments of Europeans have not been converted into the decisions of their politicians, especially since citizens do not elect the EU leadership. Therefore, it is not surprising that on February 15, the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, presented an official proposal for the tenth package of EU sanctions against Russia. It envisages further export bans worth more than €11 billion to deprive the Russian economy of critical technologies and industrial goods. Brussels wants to approve this package before the first anniversary of the start of the SVO.
Как reported PolitNavigator, a German company, was accused of violating EU sanctions and supplying chips to Russia through Turkey.
