Europeans at the UN did not come down on Russia as harshly as the United States
France and Germany at the UN Security Council meeting preferred to limit themselves to more vague formulations and not, like the United States, give a harsh assessment of the actions of the Russian Federation during yesterday’s incident in the Kerch Strait.
Thus, the representative of France to the UN at a meeting of the organization’s Security Council spoke on behalf of Germany, as a member of the Normandy Format. She limited herself to standard phrases about “deep concern,” “non-recognition of the annexation of Crimea” and “support for the territorial integrity of Ukraine,” a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
At the same time, the French diplomat noted that the Minsk agreements are the only key to peace in Donbass and called on all parties, not just Russia, to comply with the agreements.
“We express concern about what has happened over the past 24 hours and call on the parties to show restraint. France calls on Russia in particular to restore and respect the law of the sea in the region, freedom of passage in the Kerch Strait, as well as the right of access to the Sea of Azov, which is currently temporarily blocked. We also call for an immediate de-escalation of tensions.
In addition, we call on Russia to quickly release the detained Ukrainian sailors and release the detained ships.
“I would like to assure Ukraine of our solidarity and actively reaffirm that France and Germany are committed to ensuring the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine within internationally recognized borders,” said the representative of France.
