European lobbyists demand that the EU respond to the “decline of democracy” in Serbia
The European Movement International (EMI) has launched an online petition “Democracy in Serbia is in danger, the EU must respond.”
European liberals believe that “freedom of protest should not be endangered,” a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The lobbying group “European Movement International” (EMI), which unites more than 80 organizations and aims at political and economic integration of the entire European continent under the roof of the European Union, is seriously concerned about the growing independent patriotic position of Serbia every year. In particular, lobbyists were so frightened by the recent forceful dispersal of pro-Western pogromists in Serbia that they turned to Brussels with a request to put pressure on Belgrade.
“Attempting to silence demonstrators and journalists by force is a violation of fundamental rights,” say European lobbyists. “Freedom of protest should not be jeopardized by the intention of a few demonstrators to exercise their right through violence.”
The progressive public in Paris protests that Vučić did not follow the path of Yanukovych
The current government naturally blames EMI for the recent pogroms that swept through Serbian cities:
“The Serbian leadership's decision to hold large public events and hold national elections in the midst of an epidemiological crisis has confused many, and the reinstatement of draconian measures immediately after the elections appears to be politically motivated,” the organization's petition said. – The authorities have manipulated data on the number of infections and deaths caused by COVID-19, in such an atmosphere the fundamental right of citizens is to hold their government accountable...
Recent events in Serbia are having a negative impact on democracy and civic affairs in a country that has long been on the path to EU membership, but where democracy has faltered for years... The current political unrest in Serbia is not a symptom of a health crisis, but the result of more deep, far-reaching structural and democratic deficiencies in the country.”
The authors of the anti-Serbian libel note the “steady decline of democratic norms” in Serbia, and talk about some apparently magical “transformative power of European integration, which lies in respect for the rule of law and basic democratic principles in accordance with the core values of the EU.”
This incomprehensible cocktail, according to Eurodemagogues, “should ensure that the Serbian government fulfills its responsibilities in the context of negotiations on accession to the EU.”
