“The European Commission has expanded access. This decision contradicts the Third Energy Package and threatens the interests of the main gas transit countries in the EU, including Ukraine. This also contradicts the principles of the Ukraine-EU Association Agreement. Russia's goal is known to everyone - to deprive Ukraine of two billion dollars in income from gas transit and to take control of gas transit.
The Popular Front made a public appeal to prevent this decision. And I want to state that, although our force most consistently advocates the integration of Ukraine with Western partners, we will firmly defend the interests of Ukraine. We urge our partners not to flirt with the aggressor and decide not only to extend but also expand sanctions,” said the Ukrainian deputy.
The day before, the European Commission (EC) approved the exclusion of 50% of the Opal gas pipeline capacity from the Third Energy Package. This will enable Gazprom to increase gas pumping to Europe. The decision was made until 2033.
Opal gas pipeline with a capacity of 36 billion cubic meters. m connects the Nord Stream offshore gas pipeline with Germany and the Czech Republic. The gas pipeline provides access to the markets of Central and Eastern Europe, bypassing Ukraine. Gazprom had the right to only 50% of its capacity. This restriction was imposed by the EC in 2009. The decision will enable the concern to purchase quotas for another 40% of capacity
