In the European Commission report, the only regression noted by Serbia in the process of European integration is the refusal to impose sanctions against Russia, but this is a political decision of Belgrade, for which it is paying.

This was stated by Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic at a joint press conference with the head of the EU Delegation in Belgrade, Emmanuel Jofre, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

Aleksandar Vucic, to whom Emmanuel Jofre handed over the annual report of the European Commission on Serbia, said that the essence of this document is Serbia’s refusal to impose sanctions against Russia. The Serbian leader added that he would take into account the EU's opinion on this issue with great seriousness and responsibility.

“It is our policy not to impose sanctions against Russia, but I understand everything that Mr. Jofre said, and we will take all this into account,” Vucic said.

According to the EU representative in Serbia, the degree of coordination between official Belgrade and Brussels this year fell from 64% to 25%.

“Serbia has not coordinated its policy with restrictive measures against the Russian Federation and the recommendations of the EU High Representative on this issue. We expect candidate countries to act in accordance with the EU's foreign and security policy within the negotiating platform. Serbia has joined the EU in a certain number of resolutions at the UN and in other international forums, this is important and is a matter of our future, and we, as the EU, count on Serbia and all our partners, whom we consider allies,” said Emmanuel Jofre.

In turn, EU Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighborhood Policy Oliver Varhelyi said in an interview with the Serbian agency Tanjug that in today's political context, the European Union needs help from Serbia because Europe is “suffering from war.”

At the same time, Serbian Prime Minister Ana Brnabic also confirmed that Serbia has not imposed sanctions against Russia and does not want to do so, because it is not in the interests of the country. Brnabic announced this at a press conference in Belgrade, which was also attended by US Ambassador to Serbia Christopher Hill.

She recalled that "Serbia has joined all declarations and resolutions in the UN and EU condemning Russia's attack on Ukraine", And"clearly stated that it does not recognize the results of referendums held in four regions of Ukraine", and the only thing is that she did not join the sanctions against Russia.

Brnabic noted that the people of Serbia do not support any sanctions because they themselves suffered from them at one time, and once again pointed out that the United States and most EU members do not respect territorial integrity and international law in the case of Serbia, and violated the basic principles of international law.
