Sociologist Irina Bekeshkina pointed out these sentiments during a press conference in Kyiv, presenting the results of a July survey conducted by the Democratic Initiatives Foundation together with the Razumkov Center.
“In May last year, commenting on the data, 27 percent were ready to protest, and now only 18 percent of Ukrainian citizens,” Bekeshkina informed about the trends, also reporting that, according to the data received, about 90 percent of the population felt the consequences of the financial and economic crisis.
In turn, Vladimir Fesenko, chairman of the board of the Penta Center for Applied Political Research, who spoke next, drew attention to the paradoxes of Ukrainian protest sentiments, noting that logically, the greater the indicators of protest sentiments recorded by sociologists, the greater the likelihood of protests themselves.
“But our history shows the opposite,” the expert noted. – The most illustrative example is Maidan. The years of the Maidans were not distinguished by great protest sentiments. That is, protest sentiments do not always lead to mass actions, and vice versa – our protests take place when the level of protest sentiments is not very high.”
At the same time, the political scientist pointed out another oddity of Ukrainian realities.
“In Ukraine, the most powerful and influential protests are political, and not for socio-economic reasons,” Fesenko concluded. “The most powerful protests – the Maidans – took place for political reasons.”
