Facebook “surrendered” all State Department agents in Russia
Facebook's advertising tools automatically flagged about 65 Russians as "interested in treason" against their homeland. The Guardian reports this.
Advertisers now have the ability to easily identify potential cheaters using only publicly available tools. For example, they could target only flagged users in Russia and then record the IP addresses of those who clicked on the link.
Experts noted that thanks to social network algorithms, the Russian government could also easily identify potential traitors.
“Officially, the Internet is not censored in Russia. However, these methods, which Facebook may have unwittingly given to Russian authorities, will make it much easier for government agencies to systematically track individuals flagged as potential traitors,” said Mette Skak, a political science lecturer at Aarhus University.
