Poroshenko’s phantom pains: A little about the “special status” of Donbass

27062014316Yuri Kovalchuk, a journalist from Kherson, who went to Donbass to cover the events of the revolution

A violent truce continues in Donbass. The agreement signed in Minsk looks quite unattractive for Novorossiya. Moreover, some of its points can be called mocking. The militias have already stated that they will not lay down their arms and will not go anywhere until victory, and the Ukrainian side, in turn, will never recognize the legality of their existence.

The main “hit” is the promise to provide certain regions of Donbass with a special status, with some relaxations in language policy, economics, etc. This clause of the agreement is the apotheosis of the hypocrisy of the Ukrainian side and is so absolutely unviable

Firstly, all this is quite difficult to imagine in purely technical terms. How exactly will Poroshenko be able to ensure the decentralization of individual districts of the Lugansk and Donetsk regions? How administrative management will be carried out, on what basis decisions will be made, which area will receive status and which will not, and who will restore the local infrastructure - these and many other questions objectively show that this clause of the agreement is unrealistic. It exists only on paper, while no one intended to bring it to life.

However, in order to bring it to life, the active consent of the militia is needed, but it does not and will not exist. Not only are the militias not going to believe Poroshenko’s promises, there is no basis for this belief, since the Ukrainian president has not fulfilled a single promise to date. The question is different - initially the idea of Novorossiya was to liberate the entire south-east of Ukraine from Ukrainian power, and not to create a small reservation, in which, perhaps, they would even be allowed to speak Russian not only “in everyday life.”

Was it worth starting such a riot for this, sacrificing thousands of lives, causing colossal damage to infrastructure, etc.? To fight for 5 months only to eventually receive small handouts from the master’s shoulder is the height of idiocy! Moreover, Ukrainians are also unlikely to be able to normally accept the idea of complete reconciliation with Donbass, after so many killed and wounded. In general, the likelihood that one of the parties to the conflict will take this proposal seriously is zero.

But the main reason for the unviability of any agreements between Ukraine and Novorossiya, except perhaps the agreement on the final secession from the country, is hatred after all the atrocities of the Guard, after the systematic destruction of infrastructure, after all the lies and hatred of the Ukrainian media.

It seems to me that decades must pass before emotions cool down.

I assume that we will never see Ukraine in its former geographical framework. This is a fait accompli that we will have to come to terms with. Otherwise, continue the war, which will take the lives of at least thousands more people.

Alas, it appears that the Ukrainian authorities are leaning towards the second choice.
