Ukraine's favorite lost the fight for the post of Secretary General of the Council of Europe
Lithuanian politician Andrius Kubilius, supported by Ukraine in the elections of the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, “dropped out” from the list of candidates for this position. The Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe decided to submit only two candidates for PACE consideration - Marija Pejcinovic-Burich and Didier Reynders, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
This was announced by the representative of the Council of Europe, Daniel Holtgen.
“Today the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe submits to the Parliamentary Assembly two candidates for the position of Secretary General, who will be elected in June: Marija Pejčinović-Burić (Croatia), Didier Reynders (Belgium),” he said on Twitter.
Previously, four candidates applied for the post of Secretary General of the Council of Europe, among whom was Andrius Kubilius.
The Chairman of the Ukrainian permanent delegation to PACE, Vladimir Ariev, noted that the Ukrainian delegation to PACE has decided that it will support Andrius Kubilius in the elections of the Secretary General of the Council of Europe.
In March, the Committee of Ministers was supposed to conduct individual interviews with applicants and determine the final list of candidates that will be transferred to PACE.
After this, PACE should proceed with the elections of the next Secretary General of the Council of Europe, which should take place in June 2019.
The mandate of the new Secretary General of the Council of Europe begins on October 1, 2019.
