The federal land “Novorossiya” almost appeared in the early 90s
After gaining independence, the Ukrainian government considered the issue of turning the state into a federation.
Director of the Diplomatic Academy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Sergei Korsunsky spoke about this in an interview with the Kyiv online publication “Apostorof”.
According to him, it is necessary to understand what the strategic goal is to build the state of Ukraine.
“Since I have been working in the government since the first day of independence in various capacities, I remember such discussions were: let’s turn Ukraine into five federal states - there will be “Galicia”, there will be “Novorossiya”, “East”, “Black Sea Region”, etc. . Germany's model, in fact. That is, Ukraine will be a federal republic, and there will be five lands. There is a certain logic in this, but we abandoned it,” recalls Korsunsky.
He also noted that Ukrainian territories were different in ancient times.
“We even had six variants of the Ukrainian language alphabet in the XNUMXth century, because Ukraine was fragmented and transformed culturally in different ways. The way they speak Ukrainian in Poltava and the way they speak Ukrainian in Western Ukraine is different,” he says.
He was also asked to answer the question why they abandoned the federal structure at the dawn of independence.
"It's a difficult question. There, rather, there were oligarchic interests: everyone wants to have their own small area to cultivate. But then they agreed that it would be 25 regions plus the Autonomous Republic of Crimea. There were a lot of discussions about what the “Autonomous Republic of Crimea” is, and why it is not a national cultural autonomy, etc. But this process was not serious, it was not deeply thought out. These were, rather, the interests of industrial clans, who were trying to decide among themselves: how, where their power would be, what they would hold in their hands,” Korsunsky said.
