Fyodor Lukyanov explained how the West had to play by Russian rules
The Russian-American consultations on security issues starting in Geneva have become a definite achievement of Russian diplomacy.
Fyodor Lukyanov, scientific director of the Valdai Club and editor-in-chief of the magazine Russia in Global Affairs, told Izvestia, the PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The very fact of such negotiations, even if they are fruitless, can be considered a definite achievement of Russian diplomacy, since the Western side indirectly recognized the problems of European security. Until recently, its presence was denied. It was widely believed that the only problem was with Russia, which did not want to play by the rules. Now, after all, the problem has been recognized, there is a substantive conversation. This is already a shift,” says the international expert.
According to him, it is difficult to imagine that Russia's demands on NATO will in any way be met. However, the expert does not rule out that issues of military-technical parameters for the deployment of weapons, taking into account the experience of past Russian-American negotiations, may be put on the agenda.
“If everything goes well, it will be said that a negotiation process on military security is planned, at which various challenges will be considered. This is practically possible, otherwise there will only be political statements,” predicts Lukyanov.
Let us recall that the Russian Foreign Ministry published draft documents proposed by the United States on security guarantees between NATO and Russia. Among other things, Moscow proposed that the United States exclude further expansion of NATO to the east and not accept post-Soviet countries into this bloc.
