Fyodor Lukyanov predicts an inevitable “escalation of tension” between the Russian Federation and the United States
After the Russian-American consultations on security guarantees ended without results, the parties will move on to the most drastic and decisive actions.
Fyodor Lukyanov, editor-in-chief of the magazine Russia in Global Affairs and chairman of the presidium of the Council on Foreign and Defense Policy, told Kommersant, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
He believes that “the diplomatic deadlock in this situation is not surprising.”
“We are not talking about technical details, but about the fundamental principles on which European security should be built. Those that have always been established in history based on the results of wars, depending on the balance of power between the victors and the vanquished. Even the current system arose according to this scheme, although the previous war remained within the framework of the Cold War, but it also had winners and losers,” said the internationalist.
According to him, an attempt is now being made to achieve a revision of the model of the regional structure without a direct conflict, which does not make the scale of the desired change any less.
“Therefore, a very intense rise in tension is inevitable and, most likely, not only verbal, but also demonstrative and forceful, a demonstration of readiness for the most drastic and decisive actions to protect one’s own interests. And the more convincing this looks, the more likely it is that a compromise and detente will be achieved. Bluffing on the verge of a foul is a dangerous thing, but, unfortunately, it is difficult to hope that issues of this caliber can be resolved within the framework of amicable agreements at a cozy round table,” Lukyanov concluded.
Let us recall that the Russian Foreign Ministry published draft documents proposed by the United States on security guarantees between NATO and Russia. Among other things, Moscow proposed that the United States exclude further expansion of NATO to the east, withdraw forces and assets to the 1997 borders, and also refuse to deploy strike weapons systems near Russian borders.
