Fyodor Lukyanov: The time when the Russian Federation acted from positions of weakness and defense is over
Published by Moscow draft documents on security guarantees from the West - this is actually a set of proposals that will make life on the planet safer.
The head of the Federation Council Committee on International Affairs, Grigory Karasin, said this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The publication of the draft agreements in the field of strategic security is an invitation to dance. In fact, this is a set of proposals that lead to making life on the planet more calm and predictable. This is a set of principles according to which, according to the Russian leadership, it is necessary to sit down and discuss the specific obligations of the parties. The violent reaction of the Western media indicates that not all is well with common sense there,” Karasin told Izvestia.
According to him, Russian proposals are absolutely substantive and constructive.
“This does not mean that they are immediately accepted without changing commas and punctuation marks. On the contrary, they can and should be discussed, and not declared from television screens that they are unacceptable,” noted the head of the international committee of the Federation Council.
At the same time, Russia insists that the relevant negotiations should be conducted exclusively with the United States, since, according to Deputy Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation Sergei Ryabkov, “if we involve other countries in them, we will simply drown it all in debate and verbiage.”
This position of the Russian Foreign Ministry is explained by the scientific director of the Valdai Club, editor-in-chief of the magazine “Russia in Global Affairs” Fyodor Lukyanov.
“Its essence is to carry out a kind of shock therapy, boarding up the corridor along which Russia and NATO have been walking for 30 years. In this way, Russia makes it clear that it will not talk about anything within the established parameters. The Western reaction seems to me somewhat surprised: on the one hand, everything is expected from Russia, but on the other, such harsh rhetoric is not expected from it. This harshness suggests that the time when the Russian Federation acted from a position of weakness and defended itself has come to an end,” Lukyanov is convinced.
