Farmers are waiting for the price of water from the North Crimean Canal - then it will be clear that it is profitable to plant
The resumption of the supply of the Dnieper water through the North Crimean Canal stopped soil salinization in the flat part of the peninsula. This was announced by the director of the Research Institute of Agriculture of Crimea, head of the department of agricultural sciences of the Crimean Academy of Sciences Vladimir Pashtetsky.
“50% of the channel runs in an earthen bank to protect the soil from salinization through filtration,” he recalled. “Now the underground springs should fill up and the salt marshes will recede.”
Rice paddies in the Krasnoperekopsk region, in addition to agricultural purposes, performed a hydraulic regime task - fresh water prevented salt water from rising to the surface and ruining soil fertility. This year, producers are ready to sow rice on 800 of the 14 thousand hectares. The rest has been occupied by winter crops for several years.
Pashtetsky advises producers to turn their attention to the production of seeds - only for sowing sugar beets, tons of them are needed, which were previously purchased from foreign producers.
“Today we can talk about the economy and import substitution for seeds - rice, sugar beets, alfalfa, corn, soybeans. But everyone is waiting for water and the cost of this water,” summed up Pashtetsky.
