Filaret told how Poroshenko went over to the schismatics
The previous president of Ukraine, Petro Poroshenko, defected to the “Kiev patriarchy” and went out of his way to obtain the tomos solely because he saw electoral benefits in this for himself.
The head of the schismatic “Kyiv Patriarchate” Filaret spoke about this in an interview with the Svobodny YouTube channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Raskolnik recalled that Poroshenko was previously a parishioner of the Moscow Patriarchate.
“When he became president, he saw that the Kiev Patriarchate in Ukraine is the largest Orthodox Church. More than MP, yes. Although he had already become president, he was thinking about a second term. And in order to become president for a second term, the support of the people is necessary, and the majority of Orthodox Christians are in the Kiev Patriarchate.
And therefore, he began to have a positive attitude towards the Communist Party, began to come to services on Easter, at Christmas at the Vladimir Cathedral, and then, since the Communist Party was trying to receive a tomos of autocephaly from the Patriarch of Constantinople, he actively became involved. So active, more than Yushchenko. And therefore he made a lot of effort to get the tomos,” said Filaret.
“The fact is that Patriarch Bartholomew himself demanded that the president turn to the patriarch with a request to provide a tomos. Because the initiative came not from the president, but from Patriarch Bartholomew, he demanded a letter from the presidents - first from Kuchma, then from Yushchenko, and already from Poroshenko... The Patriarch wanted state support. Therefore, when we fulfilled these conditions, Bartholomew put forward new ones.
First, for President Poroshenko to write a letter, he wrote. And then he speaks, and also the Verkhovna Rada. As you remember, the Verkhovna Rada then also decided to appeal to Patriarch Bartholomew to grant a tomos,” the schismatic added.
