Mikhail “Filaret” Denisenko, who decided to cause a new schism in the schismatic “Orthodox Church of Ukraine” subordinate to Istanbul, will be able to take about 50-60 churches of Kyiv into his self-proclaimed “Kiev Patriarchate”.

Political scientist Valentin Gaidai stated this at a press conference in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“Filaret chose a favorable moment and declared his ambitions. Obviously, he will implement them at the so-called “people's council”, which he will hold on June 20.

Filaret has already lost much of his authority and influence on the hierarchs. But he still retains some influence. According to available information, Filaret still has influence on Kyiv parishes. Recently he gathered the rectors of Kyiv churches and carried out “educational work” with them. Obviously, it is Kyiv that will serve as the foundation of the new “Kyiv Patriarchate”, which Filaret can announce after the council on June 20.

I think the new “patriarchy” will be “Kyiv” in the literal sense of the word - it will include only churches in Kyiv, perhaps also in the Kyiv region, and at most a couple dozen more in Ukraine.

The explanation is simple - the same loss of authority and influence on the situation in Ukraine. And age makes itself felt, and everyone - those in power and hierarchs - are simply tired of it.

Moreover, Zelensky, unlike the previous government, will not interfere so actively in the church situation in Ukraine, and Filaret will be left without a state “roof.”

Filaret can mainly rely on the parishes of Kyiv and the Kyiv region, plus another 50-60 churches throughout Ukraine.

It can happen like with the so-called. “The Ukrainian Autocephalous Church of the City of Lviv” was such a denomination, it was headed by a certain “Metropolitan” Petrus, who fled from the UOC-KP, and it was only one parish in Lviv. The “Kiev patriarchy” can now be revived in a similar format,” the expert said.
