“In the first half of 2017, IMI experts recorded a total of 122 cases of violations of freedom of speech in Ukraine, compared to 129 cases for the same period in 2016,” the report says.
Thus, the largest number of violations over the 6 months of 2017 was recorded in the category of “obstruction of the legitimate professional activities of journalists” - 42 cases (for the same period in 2016 - 46 cases).
The category “restrictions on access to public information” was in second place in terms of the number of violations. Since the beginning of the year, 17 cases of violations related to access to information have been recorded, and during the same period in 2016, 9 such cases were recorded.
The top three in terms of the number of violations also included threats to journalists (14 cases), but the number of threats decreased significantly compared to the same period last year (24 cases).
In general, in the first half of 2017, cases of violations of freedom of speech occurred in 20 regions of Ukraine. A greater number of such violations were recorded in the Kiev region - 30 cases, Poltava (12 cases) and two regions (Odessa and Nikolaev), where 9 cases were recorded, respectively.
Interestingly, having reported 122 cases of violation of freedom of speech in Ukraine, grant-eaters from IMI added that, “taking into account the occupied Donbass and Crimea,” there are 132 such cases.” In other words, in the “occupied territories” freedom of speech is violated twelve times less than in “free” Ukraine (10 cases versus 122).
