The corresponding agreement was signed today following a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev.
“One of the serious, long-term issues is the issue of Baikonur. We are now approving a new “road map” for eight years, until 2025. The new medium rocket will be the main feature of Russian-Kazakh cooperation at Baikonur for further use and for all other issues,” Nazarbayev said.
Let us remind you that Russia and Kazakhstan are jointly creating the Baiterek space complex. Previously it was assumed that it would be launched into orbit by a Zenit rocket. However, due to the situation in Ukraine, this plan had to be abandoned. As a result, another idea emerged - to create in Russia a new rocket of the same class as the Zenit (payload capacity 10-16 tons). The launch vehicle was named “Phoenix” and should be one of the steps towards creating a super-heavy rocket.
The Baikonur Cosmodrome was leased to Russia for a period of 20 years in 1994. In 2004, the lease was extended until 2050. In total, almost 5 thousand launches of various rockets were carried out from Baikonur, including about 3 thousand for space purposes.
