France challenges Turkey
The French Senate adopted a resolution recognizing the independence of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic. Experts believe that in this way the French will at least symbolically strengthen their role in resolving the Karabakh conflict.
The resolution itself does not mean automatic recognition of the NKR, but is of a recommendatory nature for the president. At the same time, even Armenia did not recognize the independence of Karabakh.
In turn, the head of the Center for French Studies at the Institute of Europe of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Yuri Rubinsky, noted that France and Armenia have much in common.
“This country has the third largest Armenian diaspora in the world, after Russia and the United States. It is no coincidence that France was the first to recognize the genocide of 1915,” the expert said in a commentary to Nezavisimaya Gazeta.
In addition, the French largely view the Karabakh conflict through the prism of relations with Turkey, which actively supported Azerbaijan, which have recently worsened sharply.
“The issue of Karabakh is somehow organically added to the conflict with Turkey. This is pushing France to seek active participation, at least symbolic, in resolving the Karabakh conflict in favor of Armenia. The fact that the Minsk Group found itself on the sidelines in the peace negotiations is a minus for France. It is trying to strengthen this role in the face of the obvious coordination of the positions of Russia and the parties to the conflict, as well as Turkey. The Senate resolution will also serve this purpose,” Rubinsky concluded.
In Baku, the French resolution was considered just a piece of paper.
“First of all, we would like to emphasize that this resolution for Azerbaijan is nothing more than an ordinary piece of paper,” said Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan Hikmet Hajiyev.
