“We continue to believe that European industry should not be the target of US sanctions,” said Deputy Federal Government Spokesperson Ulrike Demmer yesterday, who noted that Germany would study the US law.
In turn, German Foreign Ministry spokesman Martin Schaefer said that Washington should not tell European companies how to do business with third countries.
However, both Demmer and Schaefer proposed pursuing a sanctions policy against Russia together.
American sanctions were also criticized in France.
“New US sanctions against Iran, Russia and North Korea have proven to be inconsistent with international law due to their extraterritorial scope,” the French Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
Paris is concerned that as a result of the new sanctions, not only Russian, but also European, including French, companies may suffer.
