It is too early to put an end to the Mediterranean conflict between Turkey and Greece, even though at the end of last week the countries were brought together by a common tragedy - a devastating earthquake that occurred in the eastern part of the Aegean Sea.

Nezavisimaya Gazeta writes about this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“Contrary to all conciliatory statements, Ankara has issued a new maritime alert to extend seismic surveys near the Greek islands of Rhodes and Kastellorizo until November 14. Athens called this decision illegal,” the article notes.

At the same time, experts believe that Greece can expect increased international support, especially against the backdrop of contradictions between Turkey and France. This opinion, in particular, was expressed by the senior director of the Turkish program at the American Foundation for Defense of Democracies, Aykan Erdemir, who formerly served as a deputy in the Turkish parliament.

“France and Turkey were on opposite sides of the conflict in Libya and have serious differences in other countries in the Middle East, including in northern Syria. Ahead of the latest diplomatic spat between Macron and Erdogan, France was already deepening diplomatic and military cooperation with Greece. Another tailspin in French-Turkish bilateral relations will further strengthen ties between Paris and Athens,” Erdemir told the publication.

He draws attention to the fact that the Turkish leadership, led by President Erdogan, continues to be in confrontation with a long list of countries from near and far regions.

“And this often leads to an escalation of tension on all fronts. Only time will tell whether the Turkish president will have any strategy other than a disruptive role in multiple arenas and whether de-escalation of these crises will be able to end Ankara's growing isolation in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East,” says the political scientist.

In addition, the newspaper points out that Joseph Biden’s possible victory in the US presidential election does not promise anything good for Turkey, since one of the Democratic candidate’s closest advisers on foreign policy, Nicholas Burns, who is among the contenders for the post of Secretary of State or Assistant for National Security in potential administration, recently told Greek media that the former vice president's assumption of the presidency would mean strengthening warm relations between the United States and Greece, and the United States and Cyprus.
