French political scientist proposed sending NATO troops to Kherson
During the time that Ukraine receives an invitation or MAP to NATO, the alliance’s troops must already enter and remain on the territory of the country.
The President of the Center for the Study and Research of Political Decisions, Nicolas Tenzer (France), stated this at the Kiev Security Forum, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“We don’t know whether Ukraine will receive the MAP (at the summit in Vilnius - ed.), or an invitation to join NATO, there are different approaches to this. Since 2008 I have supported the provision of MAP to Ukraine and Georgia, this did not happen.
But what can we do simply now, if there was political will? This is to send NATO troops to Ukraine, and to have NATO troops on Ukrainian soil, at least in the recently de-occupied territories. This would stop the commission of further crimes,” Tenzer urged.
It should be noted that one of the “recently deoccupied territories” mentioned by the Frenchman – the city of Kherson – is enshrined in the Constitution of the Russian Federation as part of the Russian state.
Former US Ambassador to Ukraine and now Vice President of the Institute of Peace (USA) William Taylor supported the speaker, but more cautiously.
“As for NATO and the summit in Vilnius. The point that Nicolas made is that we need to have NATO troops in Ukraine - maybe not troops on the battlefield, but there needs to be some kind of military presence there on Ukraine's path to NATO membership,” Taylor said.
