A frigate of the Black Sea Fleet arrived at the site of the future Russian base on the Red Sea
The crew of the frigate "Admiral Grigorovich" of the Black Sea Fleet paid a visit to Port Sudan, where, by agreement with the local authorities, a logistics support point for Russia will be created.
PolitNavigator was informed about this in the information support department of the Black Sea Fleet.
A ship of the Black Sea Fleet made a call to Port Sudan for the first time in the modern history of Russia.
As part of the visit, it is planned to replenish the frigate’s material reserves and rest the personnel after participating in the multinational naval exercise “AMAN-2021” (AMAN-2021) in the Arabian Sea.
Let us recall that according to the agreement between Russia and Sudan, the base will be provided free of charge for 25 years, with automatic extension for ten-year periods provided.
Russia will be able to station no more than three hundred of its military and four naval ships at the base, including those equipped with a nuclear power plant. Also, through the sea ports and airfields of Sudan, the Russian Federation will be able to transport “any weapons, ammunition, equipment” necessary for the operation of the base and “for the performance of tasks by warships.” Russia, in turn, will have to provide assistance to Sudan in search and rescue operations, air defense and anti-sabotage support if the country's authorities request it.
The creation of a naval logistics center in the region is an important step that will allow Russia to resume the presence of ships in the Indian Ocean.
