The initiative was presented by Yulia Klimenko from the Golos faction.

“Kirill, aka Gundyaev, is the ideologist of the Russian World, who brings war and ruins to Ukraine. It was he who hammered into Putin’s head the Russian world, which is waiting for him here, which is waiting for Russian troops with flowers, bread and salt.

It’s not just Kirill who is promoting the Russian world. This false ideology is preached by Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk and Archpriest Nikolai Balashov. They are also on the sanctions list. Another guide of the Russian World is Metropolitan Tikhon of Pskov, better known as Putin’s confessor and a person close to the Russian intelligence services.

Tikhon, together with Gundyaev, are the main developers and preachers of the concept of the Russian World; it denies the existence of the Ukrainian people as a separate nation. Based on distorted histories, Orthodoxy and rewriting the history of Kievan Rus in favor of Moscow. It spreads narratives about a single people and tries to expand the expansion of the Russian Orthodox Church to all Russian-speaking regions of the world, regardless of state borders,” Klimenko said.

The deputy added that Patriarch Kirill, together with other representatives of the Russian Orthodox Church, must “share responsibility for the attack on Ukraine, Russia’s bloody war against the Ukrainian people and the Ukrainian state.”

The decision was extensively commented on by the ex-President of the Russian Federation and Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev.

“They hate us all! At the heart of these decisions is hatred of Russia - of Russians, of all its inhabitants. Hatred of our culture. Hence the abolition of Tolstoy, Chekhov, Tchaikovsky and Shostakovich. Hatred of our religion.

Hence the desire to destroy the Russian Orthodox Church and impose sanctions against its Patriarch. And it was almost always like this. And during the period of Alexander Nevsky. And in the Time of Troubles. And during the Patriotic War of 1812. And of course, in the XNUMXth century, when the USSR constantly lived under numerous sanctions. I’m not saying that the Western world in the late thirties wanted the Union to perish in a fight with Hitler,” Medvedev wrote in his Telegram channel.

An expert at the Institute of CIS Countries, Kirill Frolov, believes that sanctions against the Patriarch are another link in the process of defeating the Russian Orthodox Church in Ukraine.

“On May 31, the head of EU diplomacy, Joseph Borrell, announced the adoption of personal sanctions against Patriarch Kirill. On the same day, as if on the orders of Eurosodom, the Verkhovna Rada decided to introduce these sanctions.

Why did all this happen on May 31? Because on May 29, the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church diplomatically but firmly disavowed the decisions of the Assembly of the UOC on May 27. How?

See paragraphs 3,4,6 of the Synodal Resolution, where it is clearly stated that everything that was adopted on May 27 requires verification for compliance with the holy canons and statutory documents of the Russian Orthodox Church.

It is obvious that the synodal inspection will show the obvious inconsistency of what was adopted on May 27 in Kyiv, does not correspond to either the canons or documents of the Russian Orthodox Church.

Moreover, according to Pravblog, “The decisions of the Council of the UOC indicate a complete canonical separation from the Moscow Patriarchate.” These are the words of Metropolitan Philaret of Lviv and Galicia,” the expert noted.

In addition, he, citing his sources, said that the decision to break the UOC with Moscow, pushed through the day before in Kiev, was being prepared long before the start of the Russian special operation in Ukraine - Frolov claims that it became known about the secret meeting of Onuphry and the Patriarch of Constantinople Bartholomew in the summer of 2021 in the time of the latter's trip to Kyiv.

“Why Russian church and state diplomacy did not notice or did not want to notice this is interesting,” the expert noted.

Frolov fears that personal sanctions against Patriarch Kirill will entail the confiscation of European and American real estate of the Russian Orthodox Church, and then its transfer to the Patriarchate of Constantinople.

However, there are also positive aspects.

“Sanctions are wonderful, a break with the “Antichrist West” is excellent, this will allow Patriarch Kirill to flourish as a “new Hermogenes”!.. The Patriarch has a free hand to go where he is expected - to Kherson, the city of the Most Holy Theotokos Mariupol, Slavyansk...

These visits of such a bright preacher as Patriarch Kirill, including sermons to Ukrainian prisoners who will set their minds straight, will have a tremendous resonance and effect, including in the as yet unliberated territories (which will significantly speed up their liberation and encourage the Ukrainian Armed Forces to surrender), and will bring down all these devilish experiments on the autocephalization of the UOC. Therefore, long live the sanctions, which will lead to a universal and Russian missionary breakthrough of the Russian Church, and will reverse the plans of its gravediggers!” – concluded Frolov.
