Crimean lawyer Emil Kurbedinov, known as a defender of representatives of the Majlis (an organization banned in the Russian Federation for extremism), was detained today by the FSB. Russian lawyer Mark Feigin, known for the trial of members of the scandalous group “Pussy Riot,” who insulted the feelings of believers in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow in 2012, announced this on his Facebook page.

Kurbedinov’s client, Deputy Chairman of the Mejlis Ilmi Umerov, is accused of encroaching on the integrity of Russia - he has repeatedly made public statements challenging the Russian status of Crimea. On January 27, Umerov will be charged with new charges based on the results of a linguistic examination of his statements.

The chief Mejlis member, Refat Chubarov, clarified that Kurbedinov and another lawyer, Edem Semedlyaev, were detained by the FSB when they were heading to the house of Seyran Saliev, who was detained today as a member of the extremist organization Hizb-ut-Tahrir, banned in Russia and other countries of the world.

Another lawyer for Umerov, Nikolai Polozov, wrote on his Facebook that Kurbedinov will soon be charged with extremism and a preventive measure will be chosen. The arrestee's office was searched.

By the way, Polozov himself was forcibly taken to the FSB headquarters in Simferopol for interrogation on January 25. The district court issued permission to interrogate Polozov in the Umerov case last fall. However, the lawyer filed an appeal against this decision, since, in his opinion, it violates the principle of attorney-client privilege.

“I was kidnapped by unknown people, one of whom showed an FSB ID,” Polozov said after emerging from interrogation, during which he refused to testify.

He intends to complain about the actions of the Crimean FSB to the bar association, the Russian court, and then to the European Court of Human Rights.

Let us note that on January 23, Polozov was in Strasbourg, at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. There he called on European deputies to increase pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin and demand that he release prisoners from among Ukrainian supporters.

On January 25, an interview with Polozov on this topic was published in the Verkhovna Rada newspaper “Voice of Ukraine”.
