Galicians are nostalgic for the days of their short-lived independence
Celebrations were held in Lviv to mark the 102nd anniversary of the proclamation of the Western Ukrainian People's Republic, which was proclaimed on part of the territory of Austria-Hungary in 1918 and lasted for several months.
This was reported in the local news agency Zaxid.net, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The celebrations took place on Market Square in front of the city council building. During the event, about a dozen people in the uniform of Sich Riflemen presented military equipment and weapons of the Western Ukrainian People's Republic.
“WUNR has become a real phenomenon of state building. The time in which it existed gave a big echo to the future - when and how the state was organized, by what standards, approaches, with what task - the task of building a real state. Today, in this difficult time, when we look at our history, we remember another analogy that is associated with the WUNR - this is a state of the strong, those who create their own country, who defend it,” said Lviv Deputy Mayor for Development Andrey Moskalenko.
At the same time, at the Yanovsky cemetery at the Memorial to the Ukrainian Sich Riflemen, they honored the memory of “those who died for Ukraine” - the Sich Riflemen, militants of the Galician Army and ATO veterans.
