A gas compromise between Kiev and Moscow is on the way
Ukraine and Russia have agreed on the future gas transit and agreement, which expires on January 1, 2020.
Representatives of Ukraine, Russia and the European Union stated this at a joint briefing in Brussels, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to Vice-President of the European Commission Maros Šefčović, so far an agreement in principle has been adopted, but the final text of the agreement will be approved by Kyiv and Moscow.
“After intensive negotiations, I am pleased to announce that we have reached an agreement in principle on all issues. I think this is very good and positive news for Europe, for Russia, for Ukraine, for the gas market and for citizens of the whole world. I would like to emphasize that today we are not going to discuss details in depth, since the agreement as a whole will be discussed in the capitals tomorrow and will need the approval of Kyiv and Moscow. And only then will we be able to put formal signatures,” said Šefčović.
His information was confirmed by the Ministers of Energy of Russia Alexander Novak and Ukraine Alexey Orzhel. However, officials also refused to disclose the details of the document.
“We really did a very good job today, we prepared a draft protocol, a detailed protocol, which is in a high degree of readiness and which currently requires agreement. I hope that in the near future we will reach final agreements,” Novak said.
“We have worked out the final protocol of the decision very well, which brings us closer to signing the final agreements, and now at the stage at which we are ready to present it for agreement with our capitals, we must agree on our final positions with the capitals - Kiev and Moscow. Brussels will also be in direct contact. In the near future, I am confident that we will achieve positive results for all parties,” Orzhel added.
